Meet Our Stockist: Browns of Totnes

In the heart of the charming market town of Totnes, Browns of Totnes has become a sought-after destination for brides seeking authenticity, individuality, and an effortless bridal experience. Celebrating 10 years in the industry, we are thrilled to shine a light on this beautiful space and its founder, whose passion for bridal fashion and commitment to creating a relaxed, meaningful experience for every bride truly align with our Catherine Deane ethos. From timeless classics to alternative bridal silhouettes and beautifully layered looks, Browns of Totnes embodies the modern bride’s journey - one that celebrates personal style, emotional connection, and the artistry behind every gown.

Tell us the story behind your boutique - how did it start, how long have you been open, and what inspired you to start working in the bridal industry?

Browns of Totnes was born from my imagination, from a little idea seed which grew and became a reality in 2015. We are celebrating our 10th anniversary this year!

How do you curate the designers in your store - what makes you connect with the brands that you carry?

I'm a little selfish when it comes to curating the designs and how they flow together within the boutique, in that I only buy styles I love. I only work with designers whose ethos resonates. The effort to ensure every piece coming in fits with our vibe, yet evolving and challenging both my own and the bride's style comfort zone is continual. I have made mistakes over the years, mainly when I haven't been true to myself, but now the selection is the best it's ever been! Each time I walk in and see all the beautiful designs hanging together, I am filled with awe! From the designer's pencil sketch to the sourcing of raw materials, to the seamstresses' skills, to someone's dream dress or outfit waiting to be chosen - it's a very special industry to work in.

How would you describe the style and atmosphere of your boutique?

The atmosphere is authentic. My primary goal is not to sell dresses! What I strive towards is for each bride to have a positive experience - relaxed and productive. The sale is the last piece of a puzzle, and if we get there, then whoop whoop, congratulations, you have found the one!

The style at Browns is difficult to categorise. I sometimes use the word 'alternative' but this can conjure up visions of wacky or quirky dresses in people's minds, which is not the case. The best way to describe the style at Browns is to be an alternative to the mainstream - an alternative to the predictable. A style that is effortless, beautiful, and versatile. I adore simple gowns, but love delicate, intricate lace equally as much. At Browns, we have an extensive range of separates – perfect for layering and curating your own bridal look. At the other end of the spectrum, we have structured, classic and simple gowns too. We also stock what is, in my opinion, the most beautiful range of dresses for the Curvy bride.

What do you love most about working with brides?

When I started working in the bridal industry, I did not expect the most interesting element to be human relationship dynamics - it took me by surprise. Imagine, generations of women collaborating and shopping in unison for arguably the most important outfit you will ever wear, no pressure! Wedding dress shopping is emotive and brings to the surface emotions we don't even realize we're suppressing. Trust me, it all comes out! I just love women; women are incredible. Observing families together is fascinating and, for the most part, beautiful - especially the collective euphoria when a bride finds her dress. The people I meet and the dynamics I witness are what I love most. I have learned a lot.

What bridal trends or styles are inspiring you right now?

Layering! We are each individuals, so whether you want a tailored look with an extravagant, sheer overskirt and 3D flowers, for example, the Daffodil Skirt, or a Hollywood glam gown mixed with a Gatsby style topper, or a Mikado ballgown and a full lace cape, you really can hone your own style by combining individual pieces together. Layering and separates also allow you to invest in pieces that you will wear again and againlike, for instance, to your wedding anniversary dinner. I believe this trend will stand the test of time.

Do you have a favourite Catherine Deane piece/s? Tell us what draws you to this garment/s.

My current Catherine Deane favourites (it's so difficult to choose) are the Dora Gown and the all-time classic Delia Skirt. The fabrics used in Catherine Deane designs are second to none, and the effortless, feminine beauty is what draws me to these pieces.

What is one thing you think brides absolutely must have on their wedding day (this could be anything from a make-up item, to a trinket, to a song - anything goes!)

It's not a thing, but it is important. The thing that brides must have on their wedding day is calm. Don't sweat the small stuff. Things will go wrong - it doesn't matter. You will laugh about it in the years to come. The most important thing is that you're marrying the person you love, and your family and friends will be in attendance to help you celebrate. It's a uniquely special occasion, so try not to let stress, worry, or anxiety take hold. Harness calm and enjoy every minute.

Are there any exciting dreams or opportunities you are looking forward to in the future for you and your boutique?

My dream for Browns is to continue empowering women to feel the best they can possibly feel on their wedding day. The future of the boutique is to provide a safe space full of exciting and progressive styles to inspire new brides.
